Merci, Annecy by @ByronPHoward Source [1] |
For 55 years, a small alpine town in southeastern France has held a regular celebration of cinema: the Annecy Film Festival. Since its inception, it has grown in popularity, becoming an annual event in 1998. The difference between this and, say, Sundance, is that it focuses entirely on animated films, and is one of only 4 festivals sponsored by the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA). Not only do movies debut there, they compete in various categories, such as feature films, student films, online films, and short films.

Many studios show off their work at this festival, but one in particular has been conspicuously absent: the house of mouse itself, Disney, hasn’t ever participated.
Until now.
That’s right, this year Disney is coming to Annecy to show off their upcoming works from Disney Animation Studios and Pixar, specifically Zootopia 2 and Elio! Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer, Pete Docter, and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ CCO Jared Bush, along with legendary director Ron Clements and Simpsons creator Matt Groening, along with many other members of their teams, will be hosing panels, Q&As, and other appearances.
Not only that, they will be unveiling a sneak peek of Zootopia 2 on Friday, June 13th, at the Bonlieu Scène Nationale, and will be having an open-air screening of the original Zootopia on Saturday, June 14th!
I for one can’t wait to see what comes of this, and will be brushing up on my French in the meantime, just in case the opportunity to attend arises. The festival is free to the general public, provided you can get there, so for our European readers, mark your calendars!
