About two weeks ago, the online magazine Gold Derby (which specializes in covering and predicting Film Awards) launched a vote to let the internet decide which is the best Winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Picture of the past decade. There were some heavy hitters in this competition, including the incredible Toy Story 3 and the inescapable Frozen. But Zootopia managed to top them all!
Without any interference from us here at ZNN (who did not hear about this poll until it was over), Zootopia managed to rake in a massive 40{fc17e15ed6c8f701884a899a735d4ed94fc8cfa66fc2f404dd33f42f9afeb7a1} of all the votes! The next closest contender was Toy Story 3, which got 28{fc17e15ed6c8f701884a899a735d4ed94fc8cfa66fc2f404dd33f42f9afeb7a1}, followed by Inside Out at 19{fc17e15ed6c8f701884a899a735d4ed94fc8cfa66fc2f404dd33f42f9afeb7a1}. After that, none of them scored higher than 6{fc17e15ed6c8f701884a899a735d4ed94fc8cfa66fc2f404dd33f42f9afeb7a1}, with Brave coming in at the bottom with only 1{fc17e15ed6c8f701884a899a735d4ed94fc8cfa66fc2f404dd33f42f9afeb7a1}.
We don’t know how many people participated in this poll, but considering Goldderby.com gets around 2-3 million pageviews per month, I think it’s safe to say we won this fair and square. Check out the full article on the results for yourself over on Goldderby.com!
This just go's to show how much Disney is failing to capitalize on one of there best if not there greatest movies of all time… This is like geting a gold mine dropped in your lap and they don't know how to use the tools… This would be funny if it wasn't so tragic for us fans.
Their lack of capitalizing might be the better move tho, otherwise they could easily fall into old habits, pushing their fans away by OVER capitalizing. I never had an issue with Frozen, even with a 1yr old that wanted in 24/7, but seeing it literally everywhere make me start looking down on the movie, and at Disney for trying to hard to bleed it dry. The movie alone turn a great profit, but the heavy mining beyond it made it more and more obnoxious to see. Besides, I still think Disney has no clue WHO to market to about Zootopia, and I'm pretty sure more 20+ responded to it, than kids, and adults aren't really Disney's demo.
It's almost ironic that we live in a world where Frozen continues to sell too much merchandise and being overcommercialized to the point of wearing out its welcome and becoming annoying, and yet it's Zootopia that ended up having more staying power than Frozen.
I would have liked to see more Zootopia plushies, though. I would have wanted plushies of Judy in her casual wear and farmer outfit, as well as Nick in his police uniform like in the end of the movie.
Also, can you clarify the following:
"I'm pretty sure more 20+ responded to it, than kids, and adults aren't really Disney's demo."
Are you saying that Zootopia had a larger adult demographic than it did a child demographic? Like it might as well be My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, if you were to replace the medieval fantasy setting with a modern day setting, and replace pegasi, unicorns, and other medieval fantasy creatures with real-life mammals outside of just horses alone?
20+ might have been a high estimate, maybe 18+ or 16+ are more accurate, but I'm not working with any hard numbers pull from a data mine somewhere.
But it certainly feels like that's the case, the theme and characters resonate more with adult than with kids.
Can't say much about the comparison tho, I don't know anything about the MLP fandom, and my daughter only recently started watching it. (although it caught my attention when I heard John deLancie's voice, best typecast ever lol)
And yet we're talking to each other on a fan-site that's essentially Equestria Daily (link here: https://www.equestriadaily.com/) but with Zootopia rather than My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
Also, does 20+ represent the age group, or the amount of people who voted for Zootopia over other movies like it?
20+ was meant to be the age group.
It kinda seems to be that Disney is pushing Zootopia aside on purpose, maybe it was actually too good. While the movie itself has its flaws, it presented us with world with immense possibilities. Maybe after the Zootopia early succes, they werent actually sure if they want to commit. On the other hand, abondoning the world of Zootopia, would be such a waste of money and ideas. I am kinda seeing more Zootopia merch of all kinds, even my little country, so i guess they decided to go for it.
Frozen on the other hand, was kinda safe bet. With Frozen, they knew what they are gona do, and they did it hard. Myself personaly, not being fan of musicals, cant probably appreciate how amazing it is. The toys (and almost all accessories you can think of) are everywhere though.
Brave wasn't that bad. >,>
Good to see Zootopia stomped the competition though. I'd rather Disney and the writers take their time figuring out what to do with Zootopia, than immediately jumping to work on a sequel. It's only been two years…
On IMBD there's an untitled Disney movie set for 2021, five years after Zootopia. When you consider pre production, ques for studio resources etc five years makes sense. And really there is no reason why they wouldn't make a sequel. The first one was a risk but now it's a safe bet that it will make money. So for the execs in charge whether their primary concern is money, risk aversion, art, creativity, story possibilities etc Zootopia 2 has a reason to satisfy them
I've been seeing some more specialized and obscure Zootopia merch coming out here and there, like the Revo Nick and Judy figures with the interchangeable paws and faces, among other more "collectible" items. I haven't seen much in terms of official merch from Disney themselves, however, so I'm inclined to agree with those here who are saying that it seems like Disney is, for some reason, ignoring what should be one of their top properties. It broke a billion at the box office, won the Golden Globe and Oscar, among other awards, received tons of critical praise, a huge fanbase (Zootopia has been consistently high in the fandom rankings on Tumblr for the past couple of years, and now this "best of the decade" vote really clinches it), and yet we just don't see much from the House of Mouse. I'm hopeful that we might at least get a Zootopia short sometime in the next couple of years, akin to the recent Frozen short, "Olaf's Frozen Adventure." That could tide me over until a proper sequel, if nothing else.
